It's The Little Things.

Not so long ago our neighbourhood pub had a patch of ground where they grew vegetables. Sadly new managers arrived and the ground was allowed to go to weed. A few months ago the weeds were cleared and the soil raked over. Much to everyone's delight wild flowers appeared. Poppies and cornflowers of many hues.

Out walking with my camera I thought to take a photo of this patch. Coincidently, an old colleague of mine was doing exactly the same thing. Her husband, a gardener, was no longer able to leave his home due to ill health, so she thought he might like to see the glorious flowers. We stopped and chatted and reflected on how good it was that someone had taken the time to seed this wildflower area for all the birds, butterflies and bees.

Recently I've noticed lots of areas where the same thing has happened. In Ireland a 17th century town house in Kilkenny had a huge area dedicated to wild flowers. Just down the road from there, the park had another gorgeous area of wild flowers.

On the meadow just below our garden they have left the grasses to grow to attract wild life.

We worry about the future so much, but the evidence is all around us that we do care about our environment. I wonder if you have any areas near you that have been planted in this way. I would love to hear from you.
