Music is eternal. Its definition changes through generations. But its an art, no matter what. From Whitney Houston to Nicki Minaj, all singers big or small have contributed positively (Dhinchak puja too!!) to the library. But every now and then, you find that one artist and that one song, which changes your life and who you are!!!
The first time it happened to me when I discovered my first music obsession, in 2006 and it was the longest and most loyal relationship I was ever in- Shakira. Since then many such obessions came and went, the first one still holds that special place. Since then I have fell for Lady GaGa, Melanie Martinez, Nicky Minaj and most recently Lana Del Rey.
Almost every singer sings about love- but their are few, who you can tell, once, had really loved someone and lost it. Their music speaks volumes about those stories, and their passon feels real. When the music is not about money, you sooner or later realize, how powerful is music and the words that make them, how music is saving the humanity at the cusp of war, how music is shining a light of hope onto the most exsanguinated and inspiring the most exhausted.
Recently at a moment of light headedness, one of my friends played 'Born to die' by LD Rey. I had heard that song several times before. Good music, classy video, easy to remember lyrics but I had never really loved, or a matter of fact liked the song. But that day, that song had all my attention. I listened to it, felt it, I thought about it and I realized- that its a masterpiece. That was an epiphany that changed me. It changed my definition of music. The more I listened to her the more depth and the more dimensions of the words I see.
Since that point, I have listened to a lot of her songs and her latest album- Lust for Life. She is extremely talented. I researched about her and could only find a history of alcoholism. Its difficult to say but it feels like she has faced the strongest turmoils of the fierce passion, that is love. I hope she finds what she is looking for. till then I wil keep listening to what she has to say, to me.
Her music is soft, a little dark, very well written and a story, a lesson and a journey all in itself. Her genre is soul, dark pop, 'trip hop', dream pop, and she is often called the queen of narcotics. I have an understanding now, why that's so...
I will recommend her music to anyone who listens to Adele, Melanie Martinez, Lorde, etc. Music that is soft, very well written and theres something to take away from it for life. I'm leaving you with her's Born to die. Enjoy...
